Meningitis

Meningitis is a deadly inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes, with bacterial meningitis killing up to 30% of untreated cases—even with treatment, newborns face a 20–30% mortality rate, while older children and adults also remain at high risk. Survivors often suffer lifelong disabilities, including hearing loss, epilepsy, or cognitive impairments, affecting 15% of children who recover.

The disease strikes unevenly: Sub-Saharan Africa’s "meningitis belt" suffers devastating epidemics, with attack rates 100–800 times higher than in Western countries. Overcrowding, poor healthcare access, and climatic factors like drought worsen outbreaks. Vaccines and rapid treatment save lives, yet millions—especially in low-resource regions—still lack protection.
